Turismo de Portugal recognized a record 486 companies for their dedication to sustainable practices, showcasing the sector’s drive toward a more responsible and eco-conscious future. Of these, 100 companies received the prestigious “ESG Engaged” certification, the highest level in the Programa Empresas Turismo 360º, while 386 were awarded the “ESG Committed” label, reflecting their efforts to integrate sustainability into their operations.
The Programa Empresas Turismo 360º has been designed to promote responsible practices across three key pillars: environmental, social, and governance (ESG). The program encourages businesses to adopt sustainability at every level, ensuring that tourism in Portugal not only thrives economically but also contributes positively to environmental preservation and social responsibility. With better access to funding, improved efficiency, and long-term financial sustainability, companies within this program are leading the transformation of the industry.
The 100 companies awarded the “ESG Engaged” certification have demonstrated a clear commitment to sustainable tourism by implementing measurable environmental initiatives. These efforts were tracked using the Ferramenta Organizacional de Reporte da Sustentabilidade no Turismo (FOREST), a specialized tool that monitors sustainability performance in the tourism sector. Meanwhile, the 386 companies recognized as “ESG Committed” are embracing the journey toward sustainability, actively working toward integrating responsible practices that benefit both the environment and their business operations.
Sustainability is no longer a choice but a necessity for businesses seeking long-term success. In response to this global shift, Portuguese tourism has embraced programs like Empresas Turismo 360º to ensure that the industry remains competitive and relevant. By positioning sustainability as a core value, these companies are paving the way for a future where tourism can thrive without compromising the health of the planet or the well-being of local communities.
The initiative’s impact extends beyond environmental responsibility. By fostering collaboration between tourism businesses, it encourages the sharing of best practices and supports the development of innovative solutions that enhance the sector’s overall resilience. In doing so, the program also helps secure Portugal’s position as a leading destination for sustainable tourism, attracting visitors who value eco-friendly practices.
Portugal’s commitment to sustainability has not gone unnoticed on the global stage. The Programa Empresas Turismo 360º was recently recognized with an honorable mention by the European Commission through the European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA). This recognition highlights Portugal’s leadership in promoting sustainable business practices and its contribution to regional economic growth.
As more companies join the program, Portuguese tourism is set to become a benchmark for sustainable development. The sector’s growing commitment to responsible practices promises a future where tourism supports both economic growth and environmental stewardship, ensuring that Portugal remains a top choice for travelers seeking meaningful and sustainable experiences.
