Trips undertaken by residents abroad grew 21.5% in 2023, to 3.2 million, reaching a historic high in the year in which total trips by residents reached 23.7 million ( +4.6%).
According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), on tourist demand from residents in Portugal, Spain (41.6%; +3.2 percentage points), France (10.1%, -0.7 points) and Italy (6.9%, +0.2 points) remained the main destination country for residents traveling abroad.
In 2023, domestic travel increased by 2.4% and free private accommodation increased in importance, remaining the main means of accommodation used (61.3%, +0.2 percentage points compared to 2022).
