Free public transport for students

“From April 1, the free network pass for students in Médio Tejo, called Médio Jovem, will be available”, indicated a note by CIM Médio Tejo, based in Tomar, in the district of Santarém.

As maintained by CIM, with this pass, young students will be able to travel free of charge, across the entire network of the “Meio – Para Andar no Médio Tejo”.

The services covered by the Meio Jovem pass are regular public transport for municipal and intermunicipal passengers in the municipalities of Abrantes, Alcanena, Constância, Entroncamento, Ferreira do Zêzere, Mação, Ourém, Sardoal, Sertã, Tomar, Torres Novas, Vila do Rei and Vila Nova da Barquinha.

The pass also covers the urban public transport service in the city of Abrantes (TUA) and the aBUSa service, as well as the urban public transport service in the city of Tomar – TUTomar and the urban public transport service in the cities of Fátima and Ourém – TUFO.

In accordance with CIM Médio Tejo, the Médio Jovem pass “is intended for all students, aged 4 to 23, who meet the conditions of Ordinance No.7 – A/2024 of January 5, 2024, and from 4 to 18 years old, it is not necessary to present proof of registration in teaching units”.

“From 19 to 23 years old, in addition to their identification card and other data”, it is required proof of registration in teaching units.

From April 1, students “will not need to replace their current pass, however, they must validate their pass on board, on all trips”, added CIM, which provides more information at www.meiomt.pt or via the helpline 249 78 78 78.

The CIM Médio Tejo territory covers 11 municipalities (Abrantes, Alcanena, Constânça, Entroncamento, Ferreira do Zêzere, Mação, Ourém, Sardoal, Tomar, Torres Novas and Vila Nova da Barquinha) wiht a population of 210 thousand inhabitants and an area of 1,639 km2.

The municipalities of Sertã and Vila de Rei joined CIM Beira Baixa in 2023 but maintain connection with CIM Médio Tejo in some projects, such as public passenger transport.

Manuel Jorge Valamatos, the president of CIM Médio Tejo, highlighted that this measure “will contribute to easier access to the Meio public transport network, in Meio Tejo” and in addition to transport being free of charge, the student pass covers the entire available network.

“CIM Médio Tejo and the municipalities in this region are increasing mobility solutions, and investing in this area, in commitment to the quality of life of our citizens, particularly young students, who we hope to attract more of and provide them with all the necessary conditions to study and live”, concluded Manuel Jorge Valamatos, who is also president of the Abrantes City Council.
