From the north to the south of Portugal, the Christmas lights switch-on is becoming a reality everywhere. But how about a trip to the Aveiro district to see the World’s Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus up close?
About 2h40 by car from Lisbon, Águeda has become one of the country’s most famous Christmas destinations due to its world record-breaking attractions.
The Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus in the World
In Águeda, the lights switch on this Saturday, November 16, and the Christmas program will continue until January 12, 2025. In all, there are more than 50 days to experience the magic of Christmas up close.
As in previous years, the highlights are the World’s Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus. The former is more than 20 meters high and is covered in more than 250,000 LEDs. Installed in Largo 1.º de Maio, its size is listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
As for the World’s Smallest Santa Claus, he is not visible to the naked eye. What does this mean? The nano-structure, designed by artist Willard Wigan, can only be admired through a microscope. To visit it, just go to the Tourist Office (Tuesday to Friday, from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 20:00; and on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10:00 to 20:00).
A giant snowman & extensive program
As well as the World’s Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus, this year the municipality of Águeda is bringing us another novelty: a giant snowman. You can also count on the usual Christmas Market.
It should also be noted that the program is extensive, including various cultural activities, such as concerts, theatrical performances, circus arts, workshops and workshops.
