The global streaming platform, DAZN has acquired the exclusive broadcast rights for Formula 1 in Portugal for the next three seasons.
The deal secured coverage for the 2025, 2026, and 2027 F1 seasons. The streaming platform will now offer Portuguese viewers live coverage of every race, along with practice sessions, qualifying rounds, and sprint races. All broadcasts will feature Portuguese commentary.
This agreement extends beyond F1. The OTT (over-the-top) platform also secured the rights to broadcast Formula 2, Formula 3, F1 Academy, and the Porsche Supercup for the Portuguese audience.
Speaking on the association, Jorge Pavão de Sousa, General Director of DAZN in Portugal, said, “We want to continue the growth of motorsport in Portugal and, above all, continue to value our product for sports fans. The next Formula 1 seasons promise to bring a lot of new features that will have an impact on the competition. Bringing together the biggest competition from engines in the world to the best football in Europe is another important step for DAZN to become the world reference in sports entertainment, and with the best portfolio of sports content in Portugal. In addition to maintaining the Portuguese’s favorite competitions, we have already secured three new ones. competitions for the next sporting season – UEFA Europa League, UEFA Europa Conference League and Formula 1 – with the aim of offering the best of sport in a single service.“
DAZN is a streaming service dedicated to sports fans. It offers live and on-demand broadcasts of various sporting events, including popular leagues like boxing, MMA, and some football (soccer) matches.
The move strengthens DAZN’s position in the Portuguese sports streaming market, particularly as the OTT platform recently renewed exclusive rights to broadcast LALIGA matches live in Italy and Portugal for an additional five years.
By acquiring these motorsport rights, the streaming platform positions itself as a one-stop destination for Portuguese sports fans and offers a comprehensive package of motorsports content in Spain and Japan.
This agreement underscores the rising popularity of F1 in these European markets. Additionally, F1 has signed deals with Viaplay Group, FanCode, beIN Sports and a free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channel in the United States to pursue a wider global fanbase.
The 2024 season heats up with the ongoing Miami Grand Prix, scheduled for May 3-5, 2024. The reigning champion Max Verstappen leads the driver standings with 110 points, followed closely by teammate, Sergio Perez (85 points), Charles Leclerc (76 points), and Carlos Sainz Jr. (69 points). In the constructor standings, Oracle Red Bull Racing Honda RBPT holds the top spot with 195 points, followed by Scuderia Ferrari (151 points) and McLaren Racing (96 points).
