Beautiful European country named number one place to retire with year-round sun

The number one country to in Europe is for its affordability, great weather and quality healthcare, according to a new study. 

Travel and retirement company International Living has identified the top country to reitre in 2024, according to the 

Living in Portugal gives you an abundance of choices: you can base yourself in a sleepy fishing village, a thriving beach resort, a mountain retreat, or in the heart of vibrant Lisbon – where the restaurants, museums, and attractions rival anything else in Europe.

Portuguese people are some of the most relaxed, family-oriented, helpful, and courteous people you’ll meet anywhere so making friends is easy, according to the travel company.

Property near the coast comes with a higher price tag and brings summer tourists, just like anywhere else in the world.

For a more authentic vibe, head inland, where rural villages lay in the shadow of castle ruins, surrounded by lush, emerald, green rolling hills.

“It’s hard to believe that we could retire in our 50s on my small firefighter pension,” says Clyde Coles. “Not only that, but we were able to save enough money to travel, and now live full-time in Portugal.”

For Americans, the biggest savings often comes with healthcare in Portugal, yet you don’t have to sacrifice quality.

Portugal continually comes in at number 12 according to the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) ranking.

Residents in Portugal have access to both the public and the private healthcare system.

The public system is free to join and covers all ages. Small copays do apply when seeing a doctor or being hospitalized up to a certain age, and then it’s free.
