FIFA will carry out a technical inspection of the Dragão, Alvalade, and Luz stadiums, on May 26 and 27, to assess the possibility of the three venues hosting the World Cup 2030 football games.
The FC Porto, Sporting, and Benfica stadiums are the only ones with the minimum capacity to host games in the World Cup 2030, a competition that Portugal is organising jointly with Spain and Morocco.
On April 4, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Fernando Gomes, announced that the Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon, would host one of the semi-finals of the competition.
“Portugal will have a semi-final together with the country that does not host the final”, stated the federative leader, adding that FIFA requires the venue to have at least 60 thousand seats.
Among the three stadiums that will host the competition – two in Lisbon (Estadio José Alvalade and Estádio da Luz) and one in Porto (Estadio do Dragão) – only the Benfica venue exceeds this capacity.
